heyyaa
I've seen a couple of dynos... and I'm really not sure what to expect from a mild J35 build with RL pistons.
I know a lot of factors play into it, but ive seen dynos from all across the board with these builds. Take powerrevracing for example, the shortblock they are selling made 300WHP with slightly modded heads (i wonder what was done do them), and then there are some builds putting out 280HP / 240TQ with a lot more extensive mods done to it (bigger TB, diff intake manifold, aftermarket retainers / springs, etc)
What are some must have mods when buildling these motors? I dont want to spend all this money and end up making 40 more HP and 20 more TQ than a J32.

If youre taking the time to do the build, dont cheap out, get a good PnP on the heads. Thats where you make or break the build. P2Rs 3.5 was PnP'd and I believe they shaved 1mm off the heads as well.
My 3.6 is putting out 281/257 at the wheels with the stock 2.25" exhaust and a small intake and throttle body. My new intake and manifold is finished so once I install it and my exhaust Im hoping for ~305/280. My heads have been fully worked though, I just need a nice set of cams and Im golden.
Most of the 3.5 builds that Ive seen without massaged heads are around 270/240 at the wheels.

So by milling the heads, they effectively raised the compression ratio I'm assuming? But I will be using RL pistons which are already high comp. I'm not sure if shaving the heads would be a good idea. Unless I run the CL-S pistons like they did... which is still a viable option. How much will milling the heads run me?
Also, the heads i have now were just professionally rebuilt, and they look good. I was thinking of taking a dremel and grinding out the casting marks in the intake / exhaust ports. However I've read that making those areas too smooth can also do more harm than good... something about the roughness causing air turbulence. I need to find the article, they flowbenched the heads after the PnP and the results were worse than before.
Civicdrvr, are you running j32 heads / Throttle Body? If so what kind of cams are available out there, I am not aware of any aftermarket cams out there.
Thanks for your reply, I just dont want to be dissapointed on the dyno after I spend all this money lol.

Im not sure how much milling the heads will run you. You have to do your homework before doing a PnP yourself. And yes, smoothing them too much is bad because the air wont mix with the fuel properly.
Im running J32A2 heads, full PnP, SH-AWD intake, and a bored J32A2 intake manifold.
And there are currently no cams on the market, but I expect that to change.

thats y u port the intake manifold runners and leave a slightly rough finish so you dont f up how ur fuel & air mix, the same goes for the intake side of the head and lower half of the intake manifold, then bore the exhaust ports trying to match the bore of the intake runners and only polish the exhaust ports so the exhaust can exit smoother.
ps watch out for hidden coolant passages!!!
