View Full Version : What you Need for a J-swap
I know that this sounds redundant, but some of the noobs to these types of swaps (like myself for starters) are unfamiliar with what is required for a budget J-swap. Now if anyone can compose a complete list of what you need I think would be nice so we can use it as a check list for a DIY swap.
Something like:
1. J-motor (j30, j32, j35)
2. Tranny (03 cl-s, 07-08 tl, 03-07 accord for manuel set ups)
NOTE: TL base model apparently came 6 spd LSD earlier than 07 but was not called a Type-S.
3&4. Wiring Harness, ECU (03 cl-s is a primo choice, but have heard that AEM might have one soon) (Don't forget to diable the demoblizer!)
NOTE: Make sure to get the harness and ECU for your engine ( ie Auto engine, Auto harness, Auto ECU.) and the same if you using a manual engine = manual harness and manual ECU. The manual and Auto engines have different sensor locations. Save your self some time and get the right parts your need.
5. custom axels (both hasport and DSS make axles or you can make your own(requires 4 axles to make 2)).
6. Motor mounts (hasport)
7. Shifter box/cables (from the cl,tl or hybrid racing for the kswap will work.....See tranny section of this forum) make sure to get cables and shifter for the trans your using or mods will be needed
8. Shit load time for learning electrical modification or contact the vender section of this forum. Some vendors will make you a harness for the right price.
9. Hood modification or get the 2nd gen motor mounts from hasport so you will not have to modify the hood.
10. Relocate your radiator.
11. Fuel Pump (Walbro 255 fuel pump heard works fine, I have an eg so I need to upgrade the pump if I want to run my motor under a load)
.....
What am I missing?

Thanks adam for the information I appreciate your time. Now I just need to buy my swap so that I can do a DIY write up for the swap.

2. New to me was the TL base model apparently came 6 spd LSD earlier than 07 but was not called a Type-S.

8. Some vendors will make you a harness for the right price.
Redd if you could add these to your original post that would be great.
Any thing missed or overlooked should be added as you go. Thank you for your time.

*RPM Systems are very friendly and reliable for J-swap Wire Harnesses, got mine done through them. Correct me if im wrong but I believe they are the only shop who also wire in a tach adapter so you can use your existing 4 cylinder gauge cluster and still get accurate RPM readings, a fact I like since I dont really dig the CL-S and much prefer the CTR style.
*Another thing i've learned is just like the K-Swaps, the hasport mounts are based on EG/DC engine bays so if you're swapping it into an EK Hasport says you will need the EG/DC Crossmember, Steering Rack, and Lower Control Arms.
*And you're also going to need a clutch and flywheel if it didnt come with the engine.

Yea they do wiring for the j's, but if I were you, I would stay far away from Chase.

Really? Why? I have heard good things about him..
Back on topic, don't forget that almost any J swapped Honda will need new front springs... (from what i have been told)

what do you mean new front springs? as in suspension ?

Yeah, the suspension. With the extra 100lbs or so, the front can sag down and also under-steer worse. So if you are going to bump up the power and weight on the front end that much, new front springs is a really good idea (so I have been told).

Hey, Super Noob here
I have my sights on a j30 out of a 98-99 cl (as the title reads) http://hartford.craigslist.org/pts/2246997158.html
I own a 96 EK Hatch, I've been looking for a swap out of a crashed CL, TL, 3.2 type S' (MT) But they are very hard to come by (and aint cheap).
So anyway, this motor is 300 bucks and their everywhere. If I buy it, where do i go from there. J32 6speed LSD tranny, Im sure... But I mean, which harness/ecu?? (J30 to my knowledge wasnt mated to a manual tranny)
Should I buy a J30 and piece out a swap or should I keep waiting for a crashed new CL-TL type S (MT) to come along before I die lol
I know a harness and ecu arent gonna be all of my tasks, so basically I wanna know is it gonna be a good idea budget wise?

Wait for the 3.2 to come along. You won't regret it.
A V6 swap is expensive any way you slice it. If it were me I would save my cash for now and spend a little extra on the big power swap when the time is right. You're going to want it either way.

ok thanks, I just found an 04 TL 6spd CHEAP. Is J32 out of a 02 TL a good candidate? And man, whats up with DBW (drive by wire) stuff, looks like this V6 idea I had is gonna be a f'n journey

So I'm still waiting on Rywire for his harness, but its holding up my swap what does RPM charge to do it?? As in all my wiring! lol Thanks

I will probably do a Jswap. Just curious what people think about having this swap in a crx. LMK overkill? will it run good? And if im converting into a 5lug suspension will it run good? Will most likely be doing a j32 just cus I always want the best!

Depends on the setup...but around 3500-6000...if ur thinking manual set up then sourcing the tranny and cost of it is the tough part.

This swap is a blast in the crx/ef chassie, i lot tighter fit then the other chassies, but i do not regret it. just to save u some headaches, u can not use the 36mm spline hub in a da knuckle, i had my cl hubs machined down an presses in only to find the crv 36mm outer joint hits the knuckle. So I bought 00 spec ITR hubs had them machined down to the da hub spec an pressed them in useing Da outer joints an shaft along with the cl inners. Also running the cl rotor an caliper combo, hint the reason switching to DA knuckles versus the stock crx ones.
