View Full Version : What about the L66?

I was out at the junk yards today for a h23 auto to manual conversion, and happened across a j35a4 in a 04 saturn vue for $600. I'm already about to do a EF Jswap and was wanting a j32a2 type s. Now more hp and only 5 less foot pounds of tourque, before a j3.5 crank conversion sounds nice, and from what I've read the j32 sleeves are better than j3.5. ( Frm vs. Steel )
so people say the j35s have the same intake manifold and cams as a j32type s. Some even go as far to say they have the same head but the j32-s 's valves are one mm bigger so....

1. Is the head realy the same just a 1 mm valve difference ?

2. Will the wiring on a "L66" be the same? Even though it's a GM it's still a j35a4 right ?

3. Are the cams really the same?

4. Are Frm sleaves really weaker? And weres the proof?

5. Is $600 really a good price? I've seen good prices on this site and high prices on the web. So what's normal?

6. I heard the oddessey was the only j35 without a forged crank and that GM cheapd out also. Did they mean all j35a4s don't have forged cranks? And all other j35's do?

7. Is a one port header that bad? Can't it be modified and ported like evrything else. Just bolt a bigger one piece header to it instead of three port. Seems easier to me. Are people just scared of change or are there downfalls to it?

8. I know there's not a big difference in the engines but it just seems easier to go with a engine with less stroke and more power, and then stroke and tune it, for more power. Than it is to get a engine with more stroke and less power and try to modify it to become more than the latter.

Im not realy interested in this engine but it caught my eye because it was local and a good price for a bs junk yard. So let me know if I'm passing up a good engine with potential. I've read most the posts on this site, so I don't need repeat info, but welcome any opinions or new info you might have about this engine. Like I said more than likely I'll do a j32/35 hybrid but thought I'd be nice to try to go a little deaper than stuff that's has been posted already.

well i can talk about the wiring and the lower end from experience. well the wiring is 90% the same . where c101 and c102 there different. gm to save on cost they use cast instead of forged. motor will be good for na driving.

As far as ODY cranks go, I personally talk to the Lead engineer (Odyssey powerplant) from American Honda a few months ago and he told me "All honda ODY cranks are forged with powder forged rods".

From what I understand the older MDX J35 is one of the only J35's with the big valves and cams.

FR sleevs are great as long as you stay with stock bore and no boost or NO2

Thanks for the replies. Great Info. Keep it coming. I know this stuffs been gone over alot but it's nice to be able to double check the info. It's not really about buying the engine. It's more about trying to learn as much as I can. Hell for $600 it's almost worth it to boost it just to see how much it could take stock before it blows.

I wonder if there is a looked over engine out there like the mdx that has equivalant cams to a type s? Or if they're just close. Itd be nice to know for sure. I bet they'd be cheaper than type s. Something to hold everyone over till real cams hit the market.

$600 seems decent but you might do better if you hold out for a better deal or know the right people. I bought a j32a2 & j35a4 for $700 from a friend of mine.

YES a manifold cast in the head IS THAT BAD. Without control of the length of the primaries you can't tune a header for a certain desired output range. You can still make it flow better but you won't be able to control it's wave reflection and scavenging influence on the engine. Perhaps it isn't that big if a deal for the average user. It's not like Honda would put it there if it were an impediment on the performance of the engine in stock guise, but if you are planning on going highly tuned NA it's going to hurt the ultimate potential.
