I am now starting my search for a stand alone ems. I am leaning towards the AEM universal becuase there is a tuner localy who uses and recommends it because of its versatility, But I want to make sure I have search out all options before commiting to a system and making or having a harness made. So if anyone has had experience with or knowledge of any systems chime in and offer up ur opinion or any info u have of any of them.

If you are looking for the simplest solution and aren't put out by the fact that you will be shelling out lots of dough I think you are are the right track with the AEM unit.

I'm personally going to go with a MegaSquirt II kit and plan on spending less than $500 on everything; including a Mil Spec circular connector. Buying the unassembled kit ($260) and doing a 6 hour soldering project sounds like an interesting challenge to me. It should be very rewarding and it will also be nice to gain a better understanding of EMS. I few years back I read a standalone EMS installation manual from cover to cover and that taught me about programming an EMS; will be nice to understand the functions of the hardware itself a little bit better.

All of the features you are looking for will be available on MSIII and it will be a daughter board to the MSII unit. That means you can get everything up and going with a more or less basic unit and then add extra features later on.

The drawbacks to going MegaSquirt are that there aren't a lot of tuners willing to work with MegaSquirt and getting a base map can be troublesome. However, once it's been done the first time everyone can get their hands on it for free since it's open source.

I'm also looking forward to doing all of the necessary calculations to come up with the initial base map.

What kind of time table are you looking at executing your project in?

Where did u find this info on MS3? A link or sumthin? And I am not aware of any tuners in my area that will tune mega squirt. I am looking to give it an official kick off/tear down of the car in feb 2010 but I have purchased a motor already. And as far as a time table for it to be complete really depends on if I decide to run a wet or direct port system and if I decide to sleeve the block which I am still debabting because 93mm bore just sounds sexy. Not sleeving the block will save me 1700 and a wet kit will save me 500 so with the I could basically completely rebuild the motor or spend the extra and go sleeved fully build with direct port

The MegaSquirt III site is http://www.ms3efi.com/

and I'll be ordering my bits from http://diyautotune.com/ - They have a great reputation and the owner is ever-willing to be of assistance ;).

Well the MS3 will actually work for everything I need. But ima have to make calls and see if a tuner I trust locally will tune it for me. And does the MS harness need to be a race style harness like most stand alone's or can u wire/splice it to your existing harness like AEM offers?

Mostly track use but I need to be able to drive on the street but not as a DD and it has to pass are emmissons testing here but with a good tune that shouldn't be a problem.

so drag i assume. So are you trying to do a 3.7 internals setup with a max bore etc? only reason i ask is becaause i wanted to do a 3.7 stroker and compared prices along with weight and torque in a fwd car and realized 3.7 would be much more costly when i could make the same power almost with a 3.5 and traction will be an issue.

Yes for drag. I have thought about the 3.7 crank but the draw back is extending the snout and to find a shop u trust to do that. I am planning on using the 3.5 motor which I picked up cheap and rebuilding it with a 12:1 comp, valve train, PnP work, and all the good stuff. I'm debating sleeving as well. As far as traction I am prepared to face that issue and based of my dyno results I will either be using 24.5" or 26" slicks and of course a stiffer suspension setup which I am also lookin into and a traction bar which I'm pickin up buying in the next few days.
