View Full Version : Hickam Series J32 turbo EG build

I went from LS turbo to K24 turbo and now on to a V6 turbo. I will post my progress pics as I get some accomplished. Here is what I have so far. Major goal with car is to have fun. V6 swaps are rarely done and even more rare turbo. I understand v6=torque+FWD=no traction, but we will see how it goes. Using a 67mm turbo with ID1000 injectors.
Everything is a very tight fit when adding the turbo. Onto the pics...

AMAZING. I LOVE your fabbing skills... Almost makes me wish the 2nd gen V6s' heads were built the same way as the first gen's. Those new cast heads aren't as good enough, let alone restricting the creation of custom fabbing. I'm going to keep my eye on this build. ;)

Well, I'm not happy with how the steering rack looks like garbage with a freshly powdercoated subframe. Looks like I will be taking it back off, taking it apart, and taking it to the powdercoater along with the spacer brackets for the subframe that I forgot to take.
Got the dash set in place, but still need to put everything in it. Just didn't want it getting moved around the shop and get damaged some how.
Still waiting on the piece that goes around the AiM digital dash so I can't put that in yet.
I brought my good camera with me today so I should be able to get some decent pics.

Used the factory j32 wiring harness grommet. It is going to go through the tunnel sheet metal. The shifter cables also share the same hole.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d7/93civic96ls/J32%20Project/659e91a5.jpg
The hole is big enough that I can tuck the harness real close to the chassis

Still need to figure out how I'm going to do the grommet for shifter cables. I will be getting k tuned cables when it is closer to running. I'm just using these for mockup since my buddy left them at the shop.

It's way more work than a 4 cylinder turbo setup, or hell, even an inline 6 setup, but most don't realize this and want it for pennies on the dollar.
Most would rather do it the cheap way and use their chinese headers and have tubing route to the turbo.

Midlana is the name of a mid engine locost build by the same guy that has a all aluminum locost and build kimini, a mid engine h22 mini. Traction will be the problem. My car weighs 1638 and is a handful. The part that sucks is with the M/T drags on the car it can put the power down but can't take it in the corners. With the 335/30/18 corsa 80 treadware tires I can spin wheel over 100 mph, so it sucks in a straight line, but is a blast in the corners.
Midlana is a great idea since it gets the weight over the rear wheels. Will be interesting to see what he thinks about his traction when he gets the car done.
Anyway don't want to take away from your thread sorry. Here was my build thread I don't really update anymore if you ever have time to read you can see how mine went. Took about 750 hours to complete

OH man. I just PM'd you about this. If you type in lotus Locost racelogic in youtube you can see a video of my car I tried to do for people. I made that video 4 years ago when I first finished the car.
Now yes that is the solution. Makes the car very easy to drive, but the power goes out the window. I have sense also tuned the car to be boost by gear which helps a lot as well so I'm always running the most power I can per gear.

Yes the car is way faster around a track with the traction control on. Just so you don't think its a personal opinion ask yourself why traction control was banned from F1? Was it banned because it made the cars slower? :-)
Sorry if sarcasm doesn't come through on a car forum, but those last questions were rhetorical. I would assume blur is not an avid watcher of professional motorsports so I was just having a little fun at his expense about his question of if the car is faster with the traction control. Please don't take it wrong blur. Most people know the traction control made cars lap times RIDICULOUSLY fast since the human brain cannot react as fast as a computer.

I am a fan of 24 hrs of Lemans, ALMS, Chumpcar, Pikes peak, F1 and motoGP. Hell Im surprised with all your knowledge you dont even recognize the quote in my sig. Im just blatantly confused as you mention that "the power went out the window", yet the car is clearly faster with TCS. I thought the point of building a locost car was to build the fastest car possible through the means of a high power/weight ratio... which obviously comes with traction issues.
And no, not all traction control makes cars faster, I thought you out of all people would know that.

Hey, I've noticed that here and there you mention to be looking for aftermarket internals for the J32. Do you plan on building one up and if so, details on the plans?
Also, I'm in Plano which isn't too far from you and would be interested in your manifold setup. What's the best way to contact you on this?
Damn nice ride BTW. But you should see my J-motor...;)

You to man. Nice to be able to discuss in depth coverage and information on these J-series and actually learn something. Can't wait to see what you do with this J35...
Also, don't be avoiding my first question up there in my last post! I know plans and ideas are secretive but that's what all this shit's about: bragging rights. ;)
***BTW, do you guys run the stock J32A2 ignition coils on that much boost/HP? If not, what are they good UP TO? From what I can tell, it looks like damn near everyone who is running a turbo appears to be running stock ignition components...excluding controllers that is.

Pics will be easier to show you cooling system when it's finished. Don't feel like typing everything.
As far as motor goes, all I have is pauter rods and arp head studs. I'm picking up another motor Saturday for mocking up turbo manifolds and maybe eventually it will be built. Hoping a few companies will help me out with my engine, if not it won't be built anytime soon.

Oh yeah. Dropped a stock clutch off at Monster Clutch earlier this week. We will now have an affordable twin disk that uses a chromoly lightweight flywheel. They have pressure plates for 700hp, 1000hp, and even 1500hp applications. I will know pricing in a few weeks so stay tuned!!!
The level one will give you best driveability and is what most guys will end up going with I'm sure
To give you an idea, here is the clutch for a F-body camaro and the specs. Will be very similar

Not sure why but when I was spraying my J32A2 with a 250hp shot on the first run after moving up from a 220hp shot, the motor began to bog very heavily as if it were misfiring. Seeing a rich condition during a multiple misfire on datastream made me think the mixture wasn't combusting properly due to weak ignition spark (???). I pulled out the stock J32 coils and threw in J35A8 which are about $130 more expensive EACH and also have adifferent part number and that took care of my problem. That was at about maybe 420whp...guessing. I don't know, maybe the nitrous enriched mixture is more difficult to ignite than a "boost mixture"? Lol...

I'm still running the original hasport mounts (and bushings) with stock axles.

I am assuming you issues have been traction, wheel hop and effectively delivering that power to the ground? I am also assuming this is not your daily driver? This is your race car? I am also confident that you will be one of the first to take the J-swap to the 9.xx in the quarter... Longevity is not expected in a race car.. Steps need to be taken to excel to the next level. Ride comfort and longevity may suck, but provide me with an example with a DD 9 second car that rides like a cadillac

I'm assuming this question was for me.
Yes, traction in 1st and 2nd have been slowing me down so far. However, I highly doubt that my shock-absorbing mounts are to blame. I haven't had any wheel-hop issues. I'm either spinning or hooking. There are times when I'm in between but I've killed a few axles and differentials from wheel hop with other setups and it's nothing like that.
No, it's not my daily driver but the engine is straight out of a CL or TL. All that's upgraded is the springs/retainers. I could daily drive the car if I really wanted to (eh might wanna get an air filter and have a hood that covers everything all up first, though). I don't believe that solid motor mounts are needed at this level. I don't care about ride quality, I just like my expensive transmission and prefer that my cheap/stock axles hold together (no fun to replace all the time). That's why I'm still rocking my poly-filled mounts.
Also, I know I'm putting a lot of power though this basically stock engine and stock trans but I like longevity and will do what I can to obtain it. I could have hit 9's long ago (and several times) if I was more aggressive with timing, afr, or if I full-throttle-shifted. I'm just trying to have fun and do something different. I don't feel like spending lots of money and pushing my setup to its absolute limit. Stock motors/transmission/axles and granny shifting is how I roll ... in my 10.0 poly filled motor mount "cadillac" lol.
Hickam's hatch is gonna be badass and look much nicer than mine. I just hope those solid mounts help more than they break (fingers crossed).

Here's my drawing of my fuel cell. Just waiting on them to get done getting laser cut. It has baffling and i will also be adding a stock fuel pump hanger for a walbro 255.

That's it man, I'm sick of it. All these cool, custom j-series parts you keep coming up with. I'm about do go and design the coolest, most coveted j-series part ever known to man....even if it means using Microsoft Paint to do it! ;)
Anxious to see how much better this car is going to look over the last hatch....and that's already setting the bar pretty damn high.
Been meaning to ask about your digital dash, does it require all new sending units or can it be programmed to read existing j32 signals? I've been seriously contemplating the purchase of one of these in the Accord.

You need aem. If aem reads the sensors then this one will display everything for you. You can find all the info you need at www.aimsports.com

Well I didn't sleep but for 2-3 hours last night. Went to the shop at 1am and got home at 7am. At least I got something done though. Took me about 5 hours to tack this up and then get it welded
