Ok I made my own hood today. Not sure what to make of it, but "I" llike just fine
I dug out an extra hood for my car that was given to me. and started measuring and cut and welding and grinding. 1 coat of Indigo Blue and here it is

Functional to alow the engine to breath as well as keeping bad people and the rain out. Still needs alittle bondo work but it will do for now

Might make a mold out of something. Any body here do fiberglass work??
I will try and get the template up soon. It was pretty simple once I fuigured out the "right " way to cut the angles so you are left with excess to trim off. Plus you have to spot weld in specific order so you get the metal to bend the way you want to.

I have mixed emotion's on it.

I commend you for your fabrication. I think the hoods for these swap need to go more in the direction of what splat's is. That's where you raise the hood up along a body line. The hood doesn't necessarily need to have the snorkles like his, and I was in visioning the front something more like the old cowls for the 60's mustangs.

Again keeping Splat's but croping the front off of the old 'stangs

If you do another one try making the snorkel part facing the windsheild...to release engine bay heat.

I was going to do one of those but I didn't have the extra $ to do what I wanted. My car hasn't seen rain since the swap so I had to do something cheap and soon. I have about $30 in this and it shows. Again, Its not pretty yet but that will come too.

This is another thing i cam up with, air would flow up under the car and out the back of the hood, but after driving around with my hood Don did for me feel's the best, because if you look at a stock hood with a B16 under it, it has a lot of room for air to move around it.
After a good hour of driving my hatch on the high way, you can put your hand in front of scoups and feel the heat comming out, there is just no room for it to breath.
My first thought.

What Don thought, glad i went this route.

I like how yours turned out, looks good. I have a three year old and a little boy on the way so $30 was in my budget. I raised the rear of mine up anothe 3/4" today as well to help move the air across the top of the engine.

It's hard to make a "scoop" or cover without making it look like an apple box nailed to the hood. The hood with the double scoops looks sweet!
The first pic is my first attempt. I kept shaving for the contour of the hood until it was not high enough. The second one is high enough but too boxxy looking for my liking. I liked the slight V in front but it just didn't suit. The third one is the one I am going to use as we're already getting snow here in Canada. It was made using styrofoam insulation, which is easy to cut and shape. I then covered it with tin foil as firbregass resin melts the insulation. Two layers of glass and four coats of resin is what I apply on the ouside. I used Vaseline smeared to the hood so the lip didn't stick too hard so I could remove the "scoop" from the hood to remove the sytrofoam insulation. It pretty much fell out. Then I put a layer of matting and a last layer of glass for strength. I then re-resin it onto the hood and will do the final blending and smoothng with body filler. I made sure I had enough cutout on the hood for the air intake pipe and the timing belt cover on the front of the engine.
I'll post a couple more pics when I get it finished and painted.

Nice work, as i have said before I am not a fan of fiber/resin. Good work though

Maybe with some paint, it might look better.
But props for the fab work.

I finally finished my creation. It's still a bit boxxy, but how can you hide an engine that sticks out that far from the hood line?
I'm happy with how it turned out, and it does look better after filling and paint.

I honestly think a clean cut hood looks the best.
I like the oem look, and having the motor sticking through the hoods just looks mean. lol

agreed... i think the best option for this hood issue is something close to the smooth bulge found on the cobra R, or something scoopwise along the lines of the 2010 super snake.
would be nice for seibon to take that general design if they ever make j-swap hoods instead of making something outrageous like it was designed in the mid 90s or so (see, bodykit)

I took my hood off last week so my brother and I could clean up the edges a little
just waiting for paint.

Got some paint on the hood. Turned out alright, its sealed at least. Will take the rattle can off later when I have more free time. The problem arose when I sprayed laquer over enamel (this equals crinkle paint). I never looked at the can until after the second coat was on. Too Late. Looks good from far away LOL.

Here are some pick from work and the track. Finally got the hood back on. took it down to the track to make sure it wasn't giong to crack and/or break LOL.

is it spaced up in the back so it will clear or will it clear without spacing up the back?
wolydotmatrix
11-07-2009, 09:55 PM
the spacing helps, but not necessary. with the scoop open in the front I didn't want air getting trapped at high speeds.

2.2 miles 14 turns. Trackday/HPDE http://www.carolinamotorsportspark.com/
Iused to autocross, but like drag racing the rush is gone too soon. I run in the Solo Group and usually get 5-6 25 minute sessions on track "full bore" each day. Most fun I have ever had behind the wheel of a car.

I have to hand it to you guys for actually steppin up and making hood for the swap but to me it just doesn't seem to flow well. I'm sure it is a pain in the ass to make anything seem natural/flow with the J's manifold stickin up as high as it does tho either way thumbs up!!

This is sick, but i would really love it more if that center line was not in the middle of the hood.
But mad props on the hood.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!
I know what you mean about the center line in the hood. It doesn't bother me too much though. Plus, it adds a lot of strength to the scoop portion. If the line wasn't there you could easily push down the scoop portion and it would deflect. Plus it would shake/vibrate and eventually wear out from the motor vibrations and movement.
I made a mold of this scoop after it was bonded to the hood. Let me know if anyone is interested in grabbing one.
