I noticed my car has to crank several times before it will fire.. it is a consistent time that it has to crank also.
Cold/Hot starts have no affect.
I do let the fuel pump prime as well.
Just wondering if this is something in the settings that can be changed?
Thanks.

I had a long talk with one of the AEM techs about this very issue. In fact, mine has progressively gotten worse over the last year, it now cranks about 8-10x before firing.
Basically, the tech had nothing legit to say. When my car was on the dyno, I explained the issue to the tuner, and he said "That's just the way the AEM boxes roll." If you have ever plugged the unit into a laptop and pulled up the "Output Troubleshooting" tab, you'll see that the box turns on when you key on, then once you crank, it shuts back off, then turns on again. This cycle is what takes the extra few cranks before you have fuel and spark again. Why AEM found it necessary to have the unit cycle twice with key on and crank, I'll never understand.

I have seen this issue with other EMS' as well. its very strange indeed and seems to get worst when a laptop is hooked up too it.

It sounds like the box needs to be somehow wired to a constant so it doesn't lose that power instantly. Sounds like the car stereo, how it turns off then back on when you start a car.

the reason for the long crank time , is the way aem uses the crank triggers. the aem looks for the missing trigger. about the power loose with the key . well i just say the mostlly it not one of my harness . most of the guys making the harness are wiring the EFI powers to the ignition. that is why you computes are turning off while cranking .

mine kept doing that and then one day it just won't start my car, I call aem and they told me to sent it in, after I got it back my check engine light never come one when you just turn the key..so I think aem must of did something to it, ever since I got it back..been working just find :)

interesting. I've never had a cel display on my cluster. Not sure if that is a seperate issue or not.

I'm running this in a native j-series chassis, there are no custom harnesses in the system. I should make the distinction though, the ecu still has power, but there are no output signals early in cranking.

Mine is not seeing a throttle percentage.... i see all the other inputs like rpm, iat, O2 afrs, knock, ign timing etc... they are all showing values but my throttle sits at 0% no matter what. As a result the car wont crank. since the tps is rivited on, i swapped out throttle bodies with my a2 (which has a known good tps) and saw no difference
I had my ems on another swap and it worked perfectly. only difference is now i have a base modle 3.2 and not the A2, which i didnt think would make a difference.
Im getting spark while turning over and she wants to crank but wont run. Also the car will run on starter fluid (lol) but not on gas. Any suggestions?
Oh and yes i let the pump prime before i try to crank

it comes down to who built your harness? then the problem can be solved .

Rywire but like I said, it worked flawlessly before

if you put the stock ecu on the car does it start and rev up? have you called ryan about the harness he made you ?

I am going to try an Odyssey ecu today and see what happens (reason being is its the only one i have handy) If nothing changes, ill contact ryan

check the pinouts for your specific engine. Im not sure but they may actually be different.

Hmm didn't think about that... But good news. Hooked up the odyssey ecu and she runs beautifully. Well she has idle hop and is in limp but she runs. I'm either gonna Download a different aemtuner software version or send my box to AEM to see whats up. Thanks guys

If you find that there is a different pinout, there are a couple options in AEM as far as changing the inputs/outputs, might just have to make some calibration adjustments.

ive tried using different software versions and different tunes but nothing ive tried will make aem crank the car. If the pinouts from the a2 are different from the a1 then ive been unable to locate any information regarding that. im stuck for now.. will give updates when i figure something out

Ok, so i was looking at the volatge readings for the sensors on the side of the motor with the transmission (IAT, TPS, ECT, MAP, etc...) and i grabbed the loom where all those wires meet and all the voltages went crazy. This would explain why theses sensors would not read right and the injectors and coils, CKP, oil pressure and vtec sensors were all reading right and also why the engine would run on the odyssee ecu and not AEM.
So i ordered a harness from Chase Bays and i been waiting like 3 billion years... every time i call back "two more weeks...two more weeks" when their advertised turn around time is "2 weeks or LESS"... so anyway, I will give updates If/When i get my harness back.

Totally hear you there^
I am on a Chase Bars harness. It still cranks a while during startup, and the speedo doesnt work. :(
Other thing to note is Chase wires his harnesses different for the spark/ignition, you have to change the firing order in the ecu. I put it in, loaded a calibration and it only ran on two cylinders. Took me a while figure that one out.

thanks for the heads up. much appreciated. I would have been mad as a hornet trying to get that thing running right.

Can you tell me how to get the right firing order because mine wont crank at all... And what kind of 02 sensor set up do you have?

running closed loop o2 sensor/ No o2 at all
Open up coils/inj tab.
Change Phasing values to match this...
Inj/Coil #1 = 0
Inj/Coil #2 = 8
Inj/Coil #3 = 16
Inj/Coil #4 = 4
Inj/Coil #5 = 12
Inj/Coil #6 = 20
