View Full Version : Crank Position Sensor

The motor set-up here is complete 03 CL-s manual dropout..
Which crank sensor is "Crank Position Sensor A"
The one mounted on the transmission casing, or the one behind the crank pulley?
I am throwing a CEL for Crank Position Sensor A, and have already replaced the one on the transmission casing with a brand new OEM one, and the code is still there.
Could the motor perhaps be out of time?
Maybe the Crank position sensor behind the crank pulley went bad?
Anyone have any insight or comments? Thanks

ckp sensor 1 or a is the one behind the timing cover. what code are you setting?

how high can you rev with that code?

I do not have a tach.. but not very high.. (i'd guess 3k rpm or so)
If i hold the throttle.. it spits/misses almost like a delayed "2-step"
I am seeing code CKP A right now..
thanks guys!

sorry for my misunderstanding..
Here are the codes I am currently throwing.

what flywheel did you use? if is not for the 03 cl type-s manual , you will have a problem . due to the cl type-s flywheel has a a special toothed wheel.

I do have the 03 cl-s flywheel.
I got it resurfaced, but I don't think they messed up the steel tabs.

curious to this issue as well.. hopefully I won't be in the same boat. I would've bought that used sensor off of you too! damn haha.
Good luck resolving it, be sure to let us know!

Really hoping that its not that other crank sensor.. 500 dollars or some BS...
It's like $60??

+1 for you sir...
I can't even find where I got that $500 number for.. swear I read that in the past.. Those drugs must be messing with my brain.
haha no problem.. I saw $500 and thought I got a hell of a deal on the one I bought used. Please let me know how the codes work out especially the emissions one. How do you plan on solving that one?

Not sure yet, Trying to keep my patience with this car.
Every time I touch it I seem to find out more bad news, But I will post my findings.

that is the right flywheel . check power going to the sensor .
bule/red- signal to A12
yellow/black- 12v key on
brown/yellow- gnd to engine block
test the connections between the plug and the proper connection points on the harness.

I will recheck them again, thanks for the tip..
Are you positive that code is related to the flywheel sensor?
I think it is for the one reading the crank sprocket.. that one is often referred to as CKP 1. I can only assume it is CKP A
Here's what alldata gives me.. not sure why the B sensor is included

^ Those are the exact steps I went through when I first got the motor started and realized this problem.
Everything checked out good, so i assumed I had a bad sensor. Replaced the sensor and still no luck.
Now I am seeing a code for CKP A (Maybe I missed that 'A' the first time), and has me wondering.
Im thinking I will check the wiring for the CKP A sensor next, and see if that yields anything.
I can send you my wiring and sensor to test if you want

p0335 is explicitly for the sensor/wiring circuit behind the timing cover.
in the troubleshooting from alldata the test for the wiring not in (parentheses & without an astrix*) are the test applicable for the sensor "a" the parentheses & * are for sensor "b" there all together because they, all 4 listed codes, all share the same diag. procedure.
don't really see these sensors go bad ever at the dealer though.
good luck!

Good deal. Will check into the wiring. Thank You for the help.

I went through the alldata steps, and my wiring checked out just fine..
It is looking like I am in need of a new 'A' sensor now, and will be pulling the motor out once again.
Anyone have any tips about this sensor, as I cant really recall..
I believe just need to remove the crank pulley, plastic covers, and timing belt and it should be pretty easy.
Thanks.
Yeah..very easy with the motor out and the pulley and covers off. One bolt

question is.. try to do it with it in the car. haha
you probably could if you can get the pulley and cover off

that's what I was thinking, maybe undo both side mounts, and lower it enough to get the pulley off.
yeah no doubt. the bolt is right at the bottom.. I have a pic

I was able to get the crank sensor out today, it went pretty smooth, and didn't have to pull the motor..
Hondapartsunlimited wants about 60 bucks for the sensor shipped.
Autozone wants 69.99 and it has to be ordered..
And here is where I got that bogus '500' dollar amount (this has to be a typo)

Ok.. So I ordered a OEM honda crank position sensor A.
It came in the mail today, and I just finished installing.
To my disappointment, I am still throwing the same codes, and the car is doing to exact same thing as before. (not revving up)
I am thinking that the next step is to replace the ecu. (ouch)
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
I can send you an ecu to test if you'd like. That would help me too.

I have a base tl ecu that im using for my swap and im local. if u wanted to try it out i could meet u and u can see what happens. I bought the j swap axles and the jdm adzest from u. Its cool with me if u wanna borrow it. Just let me know if u wanna use it

I really appreciate the offer man.
My only problem is that the only ECU that will work with my engine/harness setup is a 2003 CL type S 6 speed ECU
LKSI is going to send me his ecu to test out, the people on this forum and their willingness to help out other members blows my mind.
Thank You Guys!!

Well this shit has me pretty frustrated.
LKSi mailed me his ecu (BIG THANKS DUDE).. unfortunately it still threw the SAME codes..
My next thought was a fault in my engine harness, so before purchasing a new one, I ran test wires directly from the ECU plug, to the CKP1 subharness, along with a fresh ground and battery voltage.. to again have the code thrown...
So unless one of the following is the case I am totally stumped..
1. There is a fault in the CKP1 subharness
2. The brand new OEM CKP1 sensor is bad
3. Somehow the gear is messed up and the sensor can not read it..
I am to the point that I am ready to ditch this manual longblock, go cheap auto motor and run standalone.
Any input before I make a quick decision?

i would check the continuity of the sub harness and/or re-do the book testing from the actual sensor connector(including the sub harness).
also double check the mounting for the sensor, there is the little tab that must fit in the little hole in the oil pump just right or the sensor will not see the teeth on the gear.
also re-check the pin outs at the ecu connectors and every where else in between, paying attention to the orientation of the connector views in the wiring diagrams(some times they will say "as viewed from the wire side of the connector" or some thing along those lines which can get confusing when coupled with ongoing frustration).
also assuming this is a real m/t block and sensor and gear.
good luck, it sounds like your close

x2; all of those diagnostic procedures sound good to me, but my thought was the sensor mounting. Most VR sensors are only sensitive to material that comes within less than .030" of the pickup. I'd check to see that the crank pulley is fully seated and use some feeler gauge to be sure the trigger and pickup are close enough together.
Good luck, and keep up posted.

im having the same problem except mine is for the ckp sensor that reads the flywheel triggers and through the diagnostic steps in the shop manual it says to swap out the ecu but my ecu was tried on other cars and it worked for them
which flywheel are you using?
